조선의 궁이라 하면 가장 먼저 경복궁이 떠오르는데 정작 왕들은 경복궁보다 창덕궁을 더 좋아했다고 합니다.
임진왜란 당시 경복궁, 창덕궁 모두 불에 타 소실되었는데 선조는 창덕궁을 우선 복원하기 시작했고 경복궁은 조선 말기 흥선대원군에 가서야 재건되었으니 조선의 궁은 되려 창덕궁이라 생각해야 할지도 모르겠습니다.
창덕궁은 일반관람(전각 관람)과 특별관람(후원관람)으로 나뉘어 티켓을 판매합니다. 일반관람과는 달리 특별관람은 정해진 시간, 가이드의 인솔 하에 입장할 수 있으며, 그 또한 인원 제한이 있기 때문에 가고 싶어도 티켓이 매진인 경우가 있어요. 온라인으로도 표를 예매할 수 있으니 후원에 방문하시려거든 온라인으로 티켓 예매하시기를 추천드립니다.
When I hear the word "Palace," Gyeongbok Palace is the first name that springs to mind. However, Korean Kings preferred Changdeok Palace more.
Both Gyeongbok and Changdeok Palace were burnt down afterJapanese Invasion of Korea in 1592. After the Invasion Korean Kings restored Changdeok Palace first and restored Gyeongbok Palace in the late Joseon Dynasty.
Tickets for Changdeok Palace and for the Garden are separate. You can only see the garden at specific time with limited numbers of people, led by a garden tour guide. So if you plan to go visit Secret Garden on a weekend, I suggest buyng tickets at the Palace or online in advance. (link at the bottom of the blog)
창덕궁의 입구이자 티켓 검문소이기도 한 돈화문을 지나면 왼쪽에 4개 국어로 번역된 안내서가 있습니다.
오른쪽에는 궁궐 전각을 무료로 안내해 주는 전각 투어 출발지가 있네요. 다음에는 전각 무료 투어 시간에 맞춰서 한 번 더 방문해야겠습니다.
When you pass the first gate, you can see guide books translated into 4 languages on the left side.
To the right, there is the point of departure for palace tour (not for the garden tour) with a guide for free! English guide tour is at 10:15 and 13:15.
조금 걷다 보면 멀리 창덕궁의 두 번째 문인 진선문이 보입니다. 진선문에 가기 위해서는 다리를 건너야 하는데 이 다리는 금천교입니다. 금천교 아치에는 조각상이 있으니 금천교 위에서 한번 내려다보시면 좋을 것 같습니다.
You can see the second gate in the distance.
When you pass a bridge to the second gate, take a look down on the bridge. You can see statues at the bottom of each side of the bridge.
진선문을 지나면 왼쪽에는 왕의 의례를 보는 인정전으로 가는 인정문이, 정면에는 숙장문이 있습니다. 저희는 후원 투어 시간에 맞춰야 했기에 곧장 숙장문을 지나 후원 입구로 향했습니다. 숙장문을 지나면 후원 특별관람 티켓을 판매하는 티켓 부스가 보입니다. 여기가 후원 투어를 시작하는 곳입니다.
When you pass the second gate, you can see two more gates.
One on the left to a palace where Kings were crowned with all due ceremonies, the other on the right is to the Secret Garden entarance.
후원 입구에서 대기를 하고 있으면 가이드가 창덕궁 후원에 대해 간략히 설명한 후 관람객들을 후원으로 안내합니다.
한여름(7~8월)과 한겨울(12~2월)에는 동선이 조금 달라지지만 저희가 다녀온 11월에는 후원입구 > 부용지 > 애련지 > 연경당 > 관람지 > 옥류천 약 90분 코스로 투어가 진행됩니다.
Garden tour varies slighty during midsummer (July~August) and midwinter (December~February), but in November, the course was like this : Bu Yong Ji > Ae Ryeon Ji > Yeon Gyeong Dang > Gwan Lam Ji > Ok Ryu Cheon.
Yeon Gyeong Dang is an aristocratic house style of the Joseon Dynasty (1392~1910) and the other areas are names of main ponds in the Secret Garden with unique gazebos. You can see different styles of gazebos with scenic views.
The tour lasts for 90 minutes however you will wish it is longer because there is so much natural beauty.

When you walk along the route with trees in automn colors it seems that every moment looks like a painting.
부용지 연못이 나옵니다. 부용지 네 면의 왼쪽부터 부용정, 사정비기각, 규장각, 영화당 네 개의 건물이 있습니다.
You can see a square pond named Bu Yong Ji. There are four pavilions on each sides of the pond.
부용정은 두 다리를 물에 담그고 있습니다.
First pavilion on the very left (Bu Yong Jeong) extends its two legs into the pond. Unique!
사정기비각 안에는 비원을 만든 세조를 찬양하는 숙종의 비문이 있다고 합니다.
Inside of the second pavilion (Sa Jeong Gi Bi Gak), there is an epitaph praising King Se-jo, son of the King Sejong, for creating the Secret Garden.
많이 들어본 규장각입니다. 1층을 규장각이라고 부르고, 2층은 주합루라고 부릅니다. 아래서 올려다본 누각이 멋스러웠습니다. 올라가고 싶었는데 안타깝게도 들어갈 수 없습니다.
The third pavilion is a second story building (Juhamnu).
영화당에는 올라갈 수 있습니다. 영화당에 부용지 반대편을 바라보며 앉으면 춘당대이라 불린 마당이 보이는데 이곳에서 과거가 열리기도 했다고 합니다.
You can go inside the forth pavilion (Yeong Hwa Dang).
영화당을 넘어 가이드와 함께 후원 안으로 더 들어가면 불로문이라고 적힌 아치형 돌문이 나옵니다.
After that, we headed to the second place of the Garden tour, Ae Ryeon Ji.
On your way to Ae Ryon Ji, you can see a stone arch gate with a letter means "Never Old!"
불로문을 넘어가면 아담한 연못이 하나 나오는데 이 연못이 애련지, 연못에 다리를 담근 정자가 애련정입니다. 애련정에 앉아 애련지를 볼 수 있다고 하는데 애련정으로 가려면 불로문으로 들어가면 안 됩니다.
You can see a small pond after passing through the Never Old Gate. That is Ae Ryon Ji.
I heard that you can also go inside this pavilion (Ae Ryon Jeong), but no one in our tour group did go.
다음 코스는 연경당입니다. 효명세자가 아버지 순조를 위해 지은 연회장으로, '경사스러운(慶)' 행사를 '연행(演行)'한다는 뜻인 이름 연경(演慶)에서부터 연회장임을 유추할 수 있습니다. 하지만 고종 때 양반가 형식의 저택으로 개조해 사용했다고 합니다.
연경당 정문인 장락문을 들어서면 다시 좌우에 입구 두 개가 나오는데 각각 사랑채(오른쪽 문)와 안채(왼쪽 문)로 들어가는 출입문입니다. 앞에서 보면 사랑채와 안채가 떨어져 있나 싶지만 어느 문을 선택하든 들어가면 다른 쪽 건물로 갈 수 있는 문이 있습니다.
The third place of the tour is to Yeon Gyeong Dang. Yeon Gyeong Dang was built by a crown prince for his father in a style of Korean traditional aristocrat house.
There are two more gates inside the main gate of Yeon Gyeong Dang. The left gate is to the main building where the mistress resides. The right gate is to the mens residence of the house. Both houses seem separate outside, but the wall beween the houses is not fully connected.
저희는 이 즈음부터 가이드보다 많이 뒤처져서 둘러보지 못했지만 서재로 쓰인 선향재의 긴 차양(선향재가 서향이라 오후에 들어오는 긴 햇빛을 차단하기 위해 차양이 길게 설치되어 있음)과 선향재 뒤편의 작은 정자 능수정이 연경당의 또 다른 볼거리라고 하네요.
Long awning of the study (Seon Hyang Jae), pavilion behind the study (Nong Su Jeong) are another good viewpoints we didn't check.

다음은 한반도 모양을 닮았다고 해서 한 때 반도지라고 불렸던 관람지와 정자 관람정에 도착합니다. 을씨년스럽게 나왔지만 관람정은 국내 유일한 부채꼴 모양의 정자이며 예쁜 정자로 유명합니다.
Gwan Lam Ji was once called as Peninsula pond because the shape of the pond is similar as the shape of Korean Peninsula. Pavilion (Gwan Lam Jeong) right next to the Gwan Lam Ji is known for the pretty fan shaped pavilion.
관람지 옆에는 육각형의 존덕정이 있습니다. 존덕정의 천장에는 청룡과 황룡 그림이 있다고 해서 보려고 노력했지만 정자 위로 올라갈 수가 없기 때문에 그림을 감상하기는 힘들었습니다. 화려한 색이다, 라는 인상만 받았어요.
근처에는 살창이 화려한 승재정, 왕세자가 독서를 하던 폄우사가 있습니다. 폄우사 옆에는 왕세자가 양반걸음을 연습했다는 팔(八) 자 모양의 박석이 있습니다.
Behind Gwan Lam Ji, there is a hexagonal pavilion (Jon Deok Jeong).
There is a colorful painting of blue and yellow dragons on the ceiling, but you have to twist your body and look up to see the painting since you are not allowed to go into the gazebo.
Near the hexagonal pavilion, you can find a small pavilion with splendid windowsills (Seung Jae Jeong).
You can also see a place where crown prince read (Pyeo Mu Sa). The place has 八 shapes arch stones next to the building, that helped prince to walk like noblesses. (Back then, dignitaries walked splay-footed with their hands clasped behind their back.)
다시 길을 걷다 보면,
Autumn is the perfect season to visit the Secret Garden.
후원관람 코스의 마지막 장소, 옥류천이 나옵니다. 소요암 근처 U자 형의 홈에서 술잔을 띄웠다고 하는데, 이 홈이 굉장히 짧습니다. 술잔을 띄웠다면 유유자적 술잔을 기울이지는 못하고 술잔이 폭포에 떨어질까 노심초사하며 서둘러 마셔야 했을 것 같습니다.
The last place of the tour is Ok Ryu Cheon.
In the "U" shaped furrow, Koreans floated rice wine cups (like using a conveyor belt) to keep their drinks cool and fashionable during leasure time.
소요암 뒤의 청의정은 창덕궁에서 유일한 초가집 형태입니다. 11월의 청의정 주변은 을씨년스러웠지만 원래는 벼를 심기 때문에 추수 전에 가면 조금 더 멋진 경관을 볼 수 있을 것 같습니다. 임금이 직접 벼를 심고 벴다고 하네요.
청의정 주위에는 마루, 방, 부엌으로 이루어져 정자보다는 집에 가까운 형태를 보이는 농산정, 정자로서 모든 격식을 다 갖췄다는 태극정이 있으니 함께 살펴보면 좋을 것 같습니다.
Cheong Ui Jeong is the only thatched hut in this Palace. If you come before reaping rice, you can see a better view. Back then, Kings themselves planted and reaped rice here.
이렇게 창덕궁 후원 관람을 마쳤습니다. 조사를 한다고 해 갔는데 놓친 게 많네요.
괜찮습니다. 창덕궁 후원을 둘러보고 나오니 폐궁시간이 다 되어서 창덕궁 전각을 둘러보지 못했거든요. 머지않아 한 번 더 갈 것 같습니다! 왜 이전에는 창덕궁이 이렇게 아름다운 걸 몰랐는지 제가 저를 이해할 수가 없네요.
After the Secret Garden tour, it was almost a closing time for Changdeok Palace, so we couldn't look around the Palace. We will come back again in the near future!
