The oldest barbershop in Korea is locaated in Mapo-gu, Seoul. The barbershop is named, "Seongu Barbershop" which opened by Seo Jaedoek in 1927 and was succeeded by Lee Sung-soon, the son-in-law, and now by Lee Namyeol, the son who has been in this field over 61 years. Thanks to the long history of this barbershop that has been sticking to the traditional barber skills, the Seoul Metropolitan Government designated Seongu Barbershop as a "Seoul Future Heritage" in 2013 to be worth preserving.
I've heard about this barbershop a few years ago, and of course, I was interested in Mr. Lee's barber skills, but I was more attracted to the old appearance of the barber shop, which seemed to have traveled to the past. Unfortunately, in 2019, the Seoul Metropolitan Government remodeled the barbershop to prevent 'the loss and damage of the Seoul Future Heritage,' which turned out to become, so-called, bland and trendy exterior.
서울 마포구에는 우리나라에서 가장 오래된 미용실이 있습니다. 바로 '성우이용원'인데요, 성우이용원은 1927년에 개업해 1대 서재덕씨의 사위, 2대 이성순씨의 아들, 3대 이남열씨가 가업을 이어받았습니다. 오래된 이발소의 역사와 전통적인 이발 방식 덕분에 2013년, 서울시는 성우이용원이 보존가치가 있다고 판단하여 성우이용원을 ‘서울미래유산’으로 지정했습니다.
저는 몇 년 전 성우이용원을 알게되었는데요, 이남열 이발사의 이발 솜씨에 대한 자자한 칭찬도 물론 한 몫했지만 과거로 여행온 것 같은 이발소의 낡은 외관에 더 마음이 끌렸습니다. 그런데 2019년, 서울시는 '서울미래유산의 멸실과 훼손을 막기 위해' 성우이용원을 리모델링 했다고 합니다. 매력적인 요소였던 낡은 외관이 현재는 흔해빠진 가게의 외관이 되어버려 너무 아쉬웠지만 그래도 이발장인이라 불리는 이남열 이발사 솜씨도 보고싶어 성우이용원에 찾아가 봤습니다.
Under the store window, there is a signboard of 'Seoul Future Heritage.' The sign marks this place "Seongu" in English, but I personally want to change it to "Seongwoo," because people who read the English name might call it as "Seon-gu." However, following the English name on the sign, I will unify the name of the barbershop on this post to Seongu.
가게 창문 아래에는 '서울미래유산' 간판이 걸려있습니다. 간판에는 성우이용원 영문 표기가 Seongu라고 적혀있는데, 이 이름을 본 사람들은 이를 '선구'라고 읽을 것 같아 개인적으로는 Seongwoo로 고치고 싶습니다. 하지만 간판 영문명을 따라 블로그의 성우이용원 영문명은 모두 Seongu로 통일하겠습니다.

성우이용원에 들어가기에 앞서 남편 머리 비포 샷을 찍었습니다. 본인은 어떨지 모르겠지만 정작 저는 만족하는, 제 이발 솜씨입니다. 훗
When we arrived at the barbershop, there were two more customers before us. We all paid in cash, so I'm not sure if the barbershop takes credit card: The cut is 18,000 won and the shaving is 15,000 won. 4,000 won for washing hair, 8,000 won for a blow dry and 15,000 won for middle/high school student cut.
가격표가 보입니다. 저희가 성우이용원에 도착했을 때는 손님 두 명이 더 있었는데, 저희 포함 모두 현금으로 계산을 한터라 성우이용원이 카드를 받는지는 잘 모르겠습니다. 세발이 뭔지 몰라 찾아보니 머리 감는거라네요.
When I was taking pictures of the barbershop, Mr. Lee, who had been giving a haircut, explained why he drew Osama Bin Laden. It was not because he had sinister intentions, but because it was just easy to draw Osama Bin Laden's face. Mr. Lee also showed me a drawing of Lee Kunhee, the Samsung founder.
가게 사진을 찍으니 묵묵히 이발을 하고있던 이남열 이발사가 할 말이 많은 듯 입을 열었습니다. 아래 사진은 이남열 이발사가 그린 오사마 빈라덴 그림인데요, 그저 평범하지 않은 오사마 빈라덴의 인상 때문에 그림 그리기가 쉬워 오사마 빈라덴 그림을 그린거지, 그 외의 어떤 의도도 없다고 합니다. 삼성의 이건희 그림도 그렸다며 제게 그림을 보여주셨습니다.
Mr. Lee was full of confident saying that people who live far away intentionally also come back to him because the hair grows beautifully even after a month or two. We told him that we came from Pyeongtaek, and he said, laughing that Pyeongtaek is not even close to the distance of 'far away.'
이남열 이발사가 본인에게 이발을 받으면 한두달이 지나도 머리가 삐죽삐죽 자라지 않는다며, 그래서 멀리 사는 사람들도 일부러 이곳으로 다시 발걸음한다기에 저희도 평택에서 왔다고 말씀드리니 평택은 먼 축에도 들지 않는다고 말하셨어요.

He trimed top and cut sides. In various videos and introductions of Seongu Barbershop, Mr. Lee he always held a razor or scissors instead of clipper, but he also uses clippers!
윗머리를 다듬고 옆머리를 깎습니다. 각종 성우이용원 영상이나 소개글에는 언제나 이남열 이발사가 면도칼이나 가위만 사용하는 모습만 봐서 그런가 바리깡을 들고 있는 모습이 왠지 낯섭니다.

바리깡으로 기본을 잡은 후 본격 가위질을 시작합니다.
Mr. Lee said that some of Josh's hair grows inside, so it's tricky to get his hair cut. To cut the length of the ingrowing hair even, he literally scissored a hair by a hair.
이남열 이발사께서 조쉬는 머리카락이 두피에 파고드는 스타일이라 머리 깎기 까다롭다고 하셨어요. 파고든 머리카락의 길이를 맞추기 위해 말 그대로 한땀한땀 정성스럽게 가위질을 합니다.
He finished neatly with a razor after scissor. It was a touch that even made me feel relaxed who was just looking at it. The razor used for haircut is a disposable, but he only uses a razor that was made in Germany for shaving. According to a person who shaved here shared his experience that his skin got smoother after getting shaved.
가위질이 끝나면 면도칼로 깔끔하게 마무리합니다. 보는 것만으로도 기분이 좋아지는 손길입니다. 조발에 사용하는 칼은 일회용 면도칼인데, 면도에 사용하는 면도칼은 독일재로, 직접 갈아서 사용한다고 합니다. 면도를 받았는데 피부가 맨들맨들해졌다고 성우이용원에서 면도한 사람의 후기를 읽은 기억이 나네요.
After washing the hair, the haircut process is done. The haircut took a total of 50 minutes from 4:30 p.m. to 5:20 p.m. Josh does not like it very much when a barber gets his hair cut slow, but he told me he really enjoyed all the process in Seongu Barbershop.
머리를 감으면 이발 과정이 끝납니다. 이발 시간은 오후 4시 30분부터 머리를 다 감고난 시각이 5시 20분, 총 50분이 걸렸어요. 조쉬는 미용사가 손이 느리면 앉아있기 답답하다며 썩 좋아하지 않는데 이남열 이발사의 손길은 뭔가 달랐던 건지 이발 과정 자체가 즐거웠다고 말했습니다.
People are more satisfied with well-shaven hair when time goes on. Josh's hair has been still growing pretty after two weeks from Seongu Barbershop. You might not quite tell the differences before/after in the photos, but when I touch his hair from bottom to top, it goes up smoothly without getting caught.
잘 깎은 머리는 시간이 지날수록 만족스럽다고 합니다. 조쉬 머리도 이용원에 다녀온 지 2주가 지난 지금도 예쁘게 자라고 있어요. 사진으로는 비포/에프터 사진에 큰 차이가 느껴지지 않을지 모르겠지만, 머리를 아래서 위로 만져보면 걸리는 것 없이 부드럽게 올라가서 촉감이 좋습니다.
According to Lee Namyeol the barber, the barbershop has been introduced in Times twice, and his reputation is high enough to be offered a large fee for teaching his barber skills in Japan. He also told us that (maybe that's why) many foreigners come. You can find some videos on YouTube :D
이남열 이발사에 말에 의하면 타임즈에도 두 번 기사가 난 적이 있고, 특히 일본에서는 이남열씨의 이발기술을 배우기 위해 거액의 초청비를 제시할 만큼 명성이 자자하다고 합니다. 그래서인지 외국인 손님도 알음알음 많이 찾아온다고 하네요!
