Dongmyo Flea Market sells diverse vintage items. In the first year of my marriage, I liked neat, one colored plate sets, but now I like different plates with unique patterns. I am not ready to buy pricey antiques yet, but I still can not resist the opportunity to enter any vintage/antique shops.


동묘 구제시장에는 구제 옷 뿐만 아니라 빈티지 그릇도 판다. 결혼 초에는 깔끔한 세트 그릇이 좋더니 어느순간부터 특이한 문양이 있는 단품 그릇이 좋아졌다. 그릇 패턴에 관심을 가지다보니 자연스럽게 빈티지 그릇에도 관심이 생겼는데 사실 아직은 빈티지 제품을 살 깜냥은 안된다. 그렇다고 빈티지 가게가 있다는 말을 듣고도 무심히 지나치지는 못해서 서울에 간 김에 동묘 구제시장을 찾았다.

Dongmyo Flea Market was much bigger than I imagined. I thought Josh and I had walked for quite a while, but after I marked the places where we walked on the map I realized that we just walked the main street of the market.

This is the route we took: I came out of Exit 3 (Mark 'A' on the map below) of Dongmyo subway station and walked to 'B' with Dongmyo on my left. The street to 'B' is also packed with vendors and spectators, but it seemed more like a normal flea market that sells new/cheap products than a vintage market. Vintage shops are located when you turn left at 'B'. Further inside you will see elderly people selling used household goods.
To the right at 'B' to the Exit 5 of Dongmyo station (Mark 'C'), there are many clothing stores.



동묘 구제시장은 상상보다 훨씬 더 컸다. 조쉬와 나도 꽤 오래 걷고 구경했다고 생각했는데 우리가 걸은 곳을 지도에 표시해 봤더니 시장 구석구석이 아니라 큰 길만 수박 겉핥기 식으로 다녔다는 걸 알게되었다.

우선, 동묘 지하철역 3번 출구(A)에서 나와 동묘를 왼쪽에 끼고 (B)까지 걸어갔다. (B)까지 가는 길에도 물건 파는 상인과 구경하는 사람들로 인산인해를 이뤘으나 그곳은 구제시장이라기 보다는 벼룩시장의 느낌이 더 강하다. (B)에서 왼쪽으로 꺾어 들어가면 빈티지라 불릴만한 소품 파는 가게들이 있다. 더 깊숙이 들어갈수록 빈티지를 넘어 손때 그득 묻은 생활용품을 판매하는 어르신들이 많이 보인다.
다시 (B)로 돌아와서 동묘 지하철역 5번 출구 (C)로 향했다. 그 길에는 옷가게가 많다.

Below is the 'B' spot. If you turn left at 'B' spot between the buildings, you will see some antique shops.
아래 '내고향집'과 '참사랑' 간판이 보이는 곳이 바로 (B) 지점이다. 여기서 왼쪽으로 꺾어 들어가면 빈티지나 소품을 판매하는 가게들이 있다.

The first place we visited was 'Samyoung Antique', which mainly sells Japanese and American cups and plates. Samyoung Antique is not very big, but there are a lot of items in every single shelf in the store. A lot more items are in the boxes under the shelves.

우리가 처음 간 곳은 일본, 미국 엔틱 그릇을 주로 판다는 '삼영엔틱'이었다. 삼영엔틱의 내부는 생각보다 넓지는 않은데 가게 구석구석 물건이 많다. 선반 아래에도 상자들이 가득 쌓여 있는데 그 상자 속에도 또 물건이 잔뜩 들어있다.

If I had decided what to buy in advance, I wouldn't have spaced out as if drifting into the sea. Unfortunately, I just skimmed over the stuff on the shelves.

컵, 주전자, 그릇, 어떤 걸 사고 싶은지 미리 정했었다면 바다에 표류하는 것 마냥 멍때리지 않았을 것 같은데 아쉽게도 아무런 계획없이 방문했던지라 어디서부터 손을 대야할지 감도 오지 않았다. 광범위한 범위에 그저 가게 내부의 선반에 전시되어 있던 물건만 대충 눈으로 훑어보고 왔다.

We bought these two small cups for Turkish coffee. Impulsive spending, but I like them.

이것저것 열심히 구경하지는 않았지만 뭔가 사고싶다는 마음에 사로잡혀 조쉬가 가끔 터키쉬 커피를 마시니 그 때 사용하자며 작은 컵 두개를 샀다. 허허.

We walked out of the store and went further inside. More shops are gathered along the both side of narrow alley.
삼양엔틱에서 나와 길따라 걸었다. 좁은 골목길을 양 옆에 끼고 가게들이 모여있다.

Even if you don't go inside to stores, it's quite fun to see things on decks.
굳이 가게 내부로 들어가지 않아도 갑판 물건을 구경하는 재미도 꽤 쏠쏠하다.

I am not sure if it is suitable price for good quility cups or the owner was trying to overchage me since it was so obvious that I liked the cups; 큰 머그잔이 필요했는데 왜 자꾸 귀엽고 앙증맞은 컵만 눈에 들어오는지 모르겠다. 갑판 위에 전시되어있던 컵인데, 갑판에는 상태가 좋은 물건만 전시하기 때문인건지, 아니면 내가 마음에 들어하는 게 너무 티가 났던건지 컵 두개에 7만 5천원이라고 해서 놀랐다. ㅎㄷ

There were also various kinds of, I must say, junk. In the past, people used to sell more valuable items, but these days, it is harder to find them. (Of course, I don't think I can tell which one is valuable even if I look close.)

온갖 잡동사니를 판다. 옛날에는 값진 물건을 많이 팔았다는데 요즘에는 보물 찾기가 힘들다고 한다. 물론 나는 봐도 모를 것 같다. ㅋㅋㅋ;;; 그릇을 연혁 따지면서 꼼꼼히 보던 사람이 있었는데 내 눈에는 그릇보다 그 손님이 더 신기했다.

Back at point 'B', we turned to the right.
다시 (B) 지점으로 돌아온 후, 이번에는 왼쪽이 아니라 오른쪽 길로 갔다.

Right side of the steet is mainly clothing stores.
처음에 갔던 왼쪽 길은 그릇 같은 소품 위주의 물건을 판다면 오른쪽에는 옷가게가 많았다.

Not only are there clothing stores, but there is a huge store that sells used plates and cups. If Samyang Antique, the first store I visited, sells filtered items, the stuff here is cheaper, but you need to look though all the stuff.

옷가게만 있는 건 아니고 크기가 엄청 컸던 그릇, 컵을 팔던 가게도 있다. 처음 갔던 삼양엔틱이 한번 걸러진 물건을 파는 곳이라면, 이곳 물건은 저렴하지만 온갖 잡동사니로 가득 차있었다.

There is also a toy store. Dongmyo Flea Market is popular for military supplies. I am not sure that is why the toy store sells a lot kinds of toy guns.

장난감 가게도 있다. 동묘 구제시장은 밀리터리 용품을 판매하는 걸로도 유명하다는데 장난감 총을 종류별로 판매하던 장난감 가게가 있던건 그런 이유일까? 흠.

Dongmyo Flea Market! Such a place to have time fly. I'd like to visit again after I have some more appreciation of antiques.

하나하나 구경하다보면 정말 시간 가는 줄 모를 것 같던 동묘 구제시장! 다음에는 그릇보는 안목을 좀 더 키워서 재방문 하고싶다.
